Ghana Food Movement is a Non-profit organization established in 2019. We work towards a resilient local food system by connecting actors across value chains, facilitating capacity building for youth and women and raising awareness on the incredible potential of indigenous ingredients and local food solutions.We’re launching THE KITCHEN, an all-round food education hub in West Africa, October 2024.

 

THE KITCHEN will be a breeding ground for the next generation of change-makers in food and agric in Ghana and West Africa. The Hub includes a fully equipped kitchen, lab, dining, and co-working space. It will be the beating heart for the food community, serving as a meet-up, learn, co-work and event space.We are dedicated to providing exceptional culinary experiences through our diverse offerings of cooking classes, market tours, pop-up dinners, and a vibrant kitchen/eatery.

Position Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and eager-to-learn commis chef to join our kitchen team. This role is perfect for culinary students, recent graduates, or anyone passionate about gaining hands-on experience in a professional kitchen environment. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced chefs, contribute to daily kitchen operations, and be part of a team that values education, creativity, and excellence.

Kitchen Responsibilities

  • Kitchen Support

    • Assist in the preparation and cooking of dishes under the guidance of the Head Chef and other senior kitchen staff.

    • Perform basic kitchen tasks such as washing, peeling, cutting vegetables, and preparing ingredients.

    • Ensure that the kitchen is clean, organized, and well-stocked, adhering to food safety and hygiene standards.

  • Learning and Development

    • Participate in hands-on training and mentorship from experienced chefs, gaining practical skills and knowledge in various culinary techniques.

    • Assist in the preparation of mise en place and learn the importance of organization and timing in a professional kitchen.

    • Observe and support the execution of cooking classes and workshops, learning how to communicate culinary concepts to students and guests.

  • Operational Tasks

    • Assist in receiving and storing deliveries, ensuring proper stock rotation and freshness of ingredients.

    • Support the kitchen team during service, ensuring dishes are prepared and presented according to the hub's standards.

    • Help with cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment, utensils, and workstations to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.

  • Team Collaboration

    • Work closely with the kitchen team, contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment.

    • Participate in daily briefings and debriefings, sharing insights and feedback with the team.

Qualifications

  • A genuine passion for cooking, innovating with local ingredients and a desire to learn and grow in a professional kitchen environment.

  • Basic knowledge of food preparation and kitchen operations is a plus.

  • Ability to follow instructions and work well in a team.

  • Strong work ethic, punctuality, and a willingness to take on tasks as needed.

  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Enrollment in a culinary program or recent graduate is preferred, but not mandatory.
